What is shutdown maintenance?
Shutdown maintenance is planned maintenance carried out while a plant, facility or vessel is switched off. It covers the inspections, repairs, overhauls and tests that cannot be done safely while equipment is running, such as opening up motors and pumps, rewinding, bearing and seal replacement, switchgear servicing, alignment and balancing.
When should I book festive season shutdown maintenance?
Book at least one to two months before your plant closes. Workshop capacity in December fills quickly, and booking early gives you first priority, time for a free inspection and fixed quote, and time to order any long-lead spares before the shutdown starts.
What equipment does CAW service during a shutdown?
CAW services low voltage and medium voltage electric motors, gearboxes, generators, alternators, submersible and freshwater pumps, drives, PLCs and automation, switchgear and control systems, and vessel equipment such as DC motors, winch motors, marine alternators and generators. We also repair certified flameproof and spark-proof motors.
What does the free inspection include?
A CAW technician assesses the condition of your equipment, confirms the scope of work and identifies parts that need replacing. You then receive a fixed-price quote before any work starts, so your shutdown budget is agreed upfront.
How much does shutdown maintenance cost?
The cost of annual shutdown maintenance depends on the number and size of assets, their condition, whether parts or a full rewind are needed, and whether work is done on site or in the workshop. CAW inspects your equipment for free and gives you a fixed-price quote before work starts, so there are no surprises when your plant restarts. Bookings invoiced between 1 December 2026 and 31 January 2027 also qualify for an extra 2.5% settlement discount.
Does CAW collect and deliver equipment?
Yes. CAW collects your equipment, repairs and tests it in our workshop, and delivers it back to site ready for installation. Collection and delivery is available across Cape Town and Swakopmund.
Can shutdown work be done on site?
Yes. CAW field service teams and our mobile workshop carry out on-site work during shutdowns, including inspections, testing, laser alignment and field balancing. Larger repairs and rewinds are done in our workshops in Cape Town and Swakopmund.
How does the 2.5% festive season settlement discount work?
Book early, and qualifying work invoiced between 1 December 2026 and 31 January 2027 earns an extra 2.5% settlement discount when the invoice is settled. Space is limited, so ask about availability when you enquire.
Is CAW open over the festive season?

What happens when my equipment is ready to restart?
Overhauled equipment should be commissioned and requalified before it goes back into service. CAW can align and balance rotating equipment, run final tests and supply test reports, so your plant restarts smoothly and you have a new maintenance baseline for the year ahead.
How long does shutdown maintenance take?
It depends on the number of assets, their condition and the scope of work. Your fixed quote confirms the turnaround for each item, and booking early lets us plan workshop capacity around your shutdown dates so equipment is back before your plant restarts.
